Substack for charity

Know what the groups you care about are actually doing, and who else is behind them. Give when a story moves you.

I'll email you when it opens.

Your feed

Stories from the work near you, and why people back it.

Posts from the groups you follow and short notes from people you know. Giving lives at the end of a post, not in the feed.

An example: these groups and people are fictional.

Forty Mondays of grocery runs, and what we stopped doing

We drive 61 boxes a week to people who can't get to a pantry during work hours. Here is the one rule we dropped, and what we need next.

Tess Marlow on why she backs Larkfield Mutual Aid
Denver · monthly since 2024
“I drive the Monday route, so I see every box go out. Rosa posts what came in and what ran short. I give monthly because it's the one place I can check.”

The fridge on Welton was empty by 4pm. So we moved the restock to noon.

A month of logging who comes when, and the two bakeries that said yes.

Know what’s happening in your city

Groups near you write about what they tried, what worked and what’s next. You follow the work itself, not a fundraising email.

Give when you’re sure, not when you’re asked

You give at the end of a story you just read, once or monthly. Every.org sends the tax receipt.

Read why friends back a group

A few sentences from people you know, on the group’s own page. Yours helps the next person decide.

For donors · Avid and what you use today

Use them to pay, check, store and send. Use Avid to decide, and to say why.

  • Use Avid when you want to keep up with a group after the urgent moment, and give again when you’re sure.

To help a friend or answer an emergency: GoFundMe, Facebook fundraisers

  • Use Avid when you want to see what a group is doing right now, in its own words, and why people you trust back it.

To check a charity is legitimate, or find the most cost-effective one: Charity Navigator, GiveWell, Candid

  • Use Avid when you’ve parked the money and don’t know where it should go. Every.org checkout accepts DAF gifts.

To set money aside for giving and take the tax deduction now: a donor-advised fund (Daffy, Fidelity Charitable)

  • Use Avid when you back several groups and want their updates in one place, with Give at the end and other donors’ reasons beside them.

To get a group’s updates: its newsletter, Instagram or Substack

Avid’s Give button runs on Every.org, so the receipt comes from Every.org. Gifts work only for orgs on Avid.
